Love Letter

One of Alex’s teachers asked us to write a love letter to our child.  She is trying to teach them about finding your writing voice and figured this would be a great way to hear voice.  Hopefully he will not have to read this  aloud………..

Dear Alex,

When you were born, I loved you immediately.  I swear you recognized my voice and would actually turn to look at me even at a few days old.  I wrote down every word you said and every ounce you gained.  I adored you and thought I couldn’t possibly love you any more than I did.  I wanted you to stay just as you were.

You got taller and stronger and started to walk. You giggled and made silly faces that made me giggle.  We read stories together and each time we stepped into the car you asked me to tell you a story – a Mommy original story. When I was pregnant with Eva we sat on my bed and you helped me write a children’s book.  You had your own journal and wrote your own stories in your four year old way.  I treasured every minute with you and thought I couldn’t possibly love you any more than I did.  I wanted you to stay just as you were.

Eva arrived and a couple of years later the twins did too.  I watched you welcome them all into our family and you started to teach them about the world.  One day when you were four you told Grandpa you had traveled around the sun 4 times and that Nana had traveled around the sun 60 times.  You were concerned though because poor Eva had only been to the mall.  I marveled at your ideas and thought I couldn’t possibly love you any more than I did.  I wanted you to stay just as you were.

School days came and I was sad because you were spending more and more time away from me.  But I watched you learn and make new friends and I was proud.  I watched you sail through elementary school and leap into middle school.  I am no longer confident in my ability to help you with your school work but somehow you find all the answers and you are thriving in a way I never thought possible.  I’m starting to think of all the wonderful opportunities you will have in this amazing world.  Now I listen to you with your friends and I laugh and I smile when I hear all of your silly conversations.  I look at you right now and see the perfect combination of everything and I cannot possibly love you any more than I do.  I want you to stay just as you are right now.

I love you Alexander James!

Love,

Mom
