Glad we finally made up

I have had quite a few run ins with Mother Nature lately and I thought she was really mad at me. I’m almost afraid to say it since the storm is not over but I think our fight may be over. The wind has been blowing here for the last eleven hours and we still have a few hours to go before we are in the clear. The weeping willows look like Medusa is laughing in our backyard and my poor crepe myrtles may never stand up straight again. The tall pine trees in the back have been doing back … Read more…

I hear there’s a hurricane coming*

All my friends, neighbors and relatives are preparing for the arrival of Irene and since I live in an area that is going to be affected maybe I should be preparing too. But I’m not. I went to the movies with a girlfriend. I feel soooo guilty. I never go to the movies, especially not in the middle of the afternoon, before a natural disaster just because with a friend. I do it as frequently as I meet girlfriends for lunch…never. Now dinners and happy hours are a different story but you get the point – a movie in the … Read more…

Greetings from a very shaky Richmond!

I live in Richmond and this has been an eventful day. Well, all my days turn out to be eventful with four kids and two dogs. But lately Mother Nature has been following me and I am not sure what she is trying to say. My friend and I took 10 kids – ours plus 3 extras – to the James River today. It’s a pretty perfect outing and FREE! The twins and Eva jump around on the rocks and the big kids head down the rapids. Everyone is happy. We set up our perch about 20 feet from the … Read more…

The perils of The Brady Bunch

After watching the awful accident I mentioned in my post yesterday, we needed to distract the kids since we still had 3 hours before we reached home. What could be better than The Brady Bunch? The Brady Brunch could not cause anyone any distress. So we let them watch… The kids watched half of a season. One of the episodes had Jan lamenting that she felt invisible. She is the middle child and nothing differentiates her from her sisters. She thinks she is forgettable. So she goes out to buy a wig to make herself look different. Of course everyone … Read more…

Wrapping up a week of wonder

This was the week of near misses for me…lightning strikes and paddleboard wrecks. But it was also a week filled to the brim with laughter and deep thoughts. One night at a fabulous little restaurant, Roadfish and Cornbread, a waiter asked if we were all related and we said no. He looked at us and said so honestly “Those that share a meal are family.” I am lucky to have so many in my life to share a meal with. I felt like Cinderella all week. The Cinderella that has met her fairy godmother. I didn’t touch a broom or … Read more…

Vacation Tales

Let me start by telling you that I have been given a nickname that goes along with my new found super power (see my earlier blogs from this week if you are wondering why I might have a super power). Justin and Ryan have taken to calling me The Hive. Not very glamorous is it? Ever since the lightning strike I have developed hives in the evening….usually while we are in the hot tub. They are only in one spot so who knows maybe it is where the lightning left my body!?!?! I didn’t get them tonight so I think … Read more…

A guardian angel or a devil on my shoulder?

We are continuing on our beach vacation so you know what that means… more adventures. Suzanne and I get up each morning and take an hour long walk on the beach traipsing over yesterday’s sandcastles. We spent the rest of yesterday morning in the pool and hot tub. This house is set up perfectly for us with the deck and patio facing the golf course and the pool is a great size for all 10 of us to play in at the same time. After lunch at the pool we jumped on our bikes and went over to Hilton Head … Read more…

Jellyfish, lightning strikes and angry dead birds

So the Farleys are on vacation….you know what that means – time for an adventure! We drove down to Hilton Head Island yesterday by way of South of the Border. As a child my friend Susan had a South of the Border bumper sticker on her car and I always thought of it as some magical place. As an adult I have passed South of the Border numerous times on drives down 95. The signs make us chuckle in North Carolina. I just asked everyone if they could remember any of the signs and Alex reported that one said they … Read more…

Writing and a little bit of preaching

Today I had an impromptu creative writing session for 9 neighborhood kids. I was energized before and after the class. I was really proud of some of the things the kids put together. I used some of my own lessons that I used two years ago when I taught creative writing at the Peter Paul Development Center in Richmond and I used some from the book Rip the Page. I want the kids to have fun with words and to just write. We always start out by writing for 5 minutes without a prompt and then we move into silly … Read more…

I’d rather clean toilets than….

I was reading an article today about the five most dreaded place to take your kids. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it so I decided to make my own list of the top 5 places that I never ever want to take my kids to again and the top 5 places that I LOVE to take my kids to. Here it goes…. I’d rather clean toilets than go to any of these places with my children: 5 – The Dollar Store – Yes, it is true every item is a dollar but there is nothing for me … Read more…
