Flowers

I have a Godiva box that looks like it was painted by Monet sitting on top of my dresser. I don’t know where the box came from or if it was ever really mine but I’ve had it since high school. My guess is that my mom received chocolate from a student and Dave ate the chocolate and I got the box. I took the box to Notre Dame and it stayed in Siegfried Hall with me, moved it to various apartments in Chicago and now it has traveled from house to house around Richmond with me. The box has … Read more…

From the pulled pork’s point of view

Dear Lady drinking the Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout on a Sunday before 5 p.m.,* I apologize for appearing on your plate today.  I agree I was not an acceptable substitute for the crabmeat in an omelet stuffed with goat cheese and fava beans with an avocado sauce drizzled on top.  Thank you for noticing that I was not crabmeat drenched in barbecue sauce. After the chef admitted the substitution, you placed a new order.  You, the so called vegan – but more accurately called fegan, ordered Eggs Benedict.  Obviously you were in need of a fancier dish to go with your … Read more…

Wake up in the mornin’ feeling like P Diddy

Or at least I woke up feeling like P Diddy would if he was a mom of four, had to make lunches and went to bed early for him but late for this mom.  (The twins sing Tick Tock  all the time because of the Wimpy Kid commercials and it gets stuck in my head.) Ok back to my morning.  I got up put on my glasses and slid into my flip flops and went down to make lunch for my brood.  When I grabbed two slices of American cheese I noticed that it was stuck to the wrapper.  It … Read more…

Ode to my Lisa

Across the yards we walk everyday We talk back and forth via phone, text and email or in our own way. Seven years ago we met and little did we know how fabulous it would be or where our friendship would go. Everyday is an adventure with seven kids between us. It takes  village especially when they are mean to us. We sit and converse and drink our Bud Light And cross our fingers that our kids will turn out alright. You’ve been through the ups and the downs with me and been there for things neither of us could … Read more…

Livin’ the Dream

Sometimes I forget that I am livin’ the dream.  When I get a call from my friend while I am making dinner before I rush out to take Eva to art telling me that Ethan has just squeezed an egg full of vinegar and yolk into his eye (don’t ask), it is easy to momentarily forget about the dream I am living.  I do get stressed out about all of the things I need to do or places I need to be and I forget that all of those things are ‘happy’ stressors.  I live a comfortable life and don’t … Read more…

I guess

I guess I am the kind of mom who can handle lots of different things. I can handle getting myself ready, four kids set to swim, hotel room packed up and everyone changed again and fed by 9:00. It all seems like a no brainer. I guess I am the kind of mom who can handle driving in the Honda pukemobile for six hours before she finally decides we cannot stop for one more puking incident. We must suffer through the last forty miles as we are out of clothes and towels. Wendy’s yellow napkins are quickly passed back to … Read more…

In laws

I hit the jackpot when it comes to my mother in law and sister in law. Our relationship has been so easy since the very beginning. When we first met, Justin’s parents were in the midst of a divorce. It was obviously a stressful time for everyone. But my parents had divorced when I was a little girl and it meant that our families just fit together so easily. My mom, Dave and I started to spend every holiday with Justin, Vikki and Shannin. Justin and I would come in from Chicago and Vikki and Shannin would drive down to … Read more…

The Brady Bunch

We bought the first season of The Brady Bunch for the kids to watch on the way to Pittsburgh. We broke it open a little early because the kids-cousins included- needed to chill after a lightning speed egg dyeing session. Just an aside, one of the egg dyes came with a white crayon to do a little wax relief dyeing on the eggs. I wrote my name on an egg and quickly put it in the dye and pretended to get super excited that the egg randomly said mom. I did the same for Eva, Mollie, Gigi, Ethan and patrick. … Read more…

Stats

I love statistics.  Well, maybe I should clarify that.  I hated statistics when I had to take them at Notre Dame.  I remember Stats 1 and Stats 2 and they were painful.  They were probably the most painful classes I took at Notre Dame.  Although, astronomy wasn’t  a walk in the park.  Maybe what I really mean is that I like numbers. When I used to run, way back when 4 months ago, I loved to calculate how fast we were going, how many miles we had left and how long that would take us.  Yes, there are apps for … Read more…

Chippy

I’m worried about our dog.  I found him in our front yard wandering around aimlessly today and yesterday.  When I called him he really had no idea who I was and he had no clue where he was.  I think he must have dementia.  He can’t really see well or hear well.  And I’m nervous…… I’m nervous that he will die soon.  He’s 14 and two of my four kids adore him.  The other two love him but Ethan and Eva can’t get enough of him.  Chip waits for Eva to come downstairs everyday.  Ethan hugs Chip more than he … Read more…
