Ahhh…Summertime?

Summer is the time that I look forward to all year long. I long to get back to my happy place, the pool. I want the lazy days of summer without schedules, homework or packing lunches. I love the freedom of not setting an alarm clock. I love the teeny, tiny moments of ordinary and spontaneous laughter that pop up during the day. I like the random gatherings of neighbors and friends on weeknights. But I’ve decided that summer may be a bit like childbirth – you forget the pain and only remember the outcome. I remember having a great … Read more…

My head is swirly

It’s the time of year, the busy, crazy time of year. The time of year that has my calendar filled with three events at the exact same time on one day. The time of year that has me running to the store after all the kids get off the bus to get the last minute supplies for the all important “Drop an egg off the roof of middle school” activity. The time of year that is filled with endings and new beginnings. The end of middle school and the beginning of high school. My oldest, my first born who taught … Read more…

A guardian angel or a devil on my shoulder?

We are continuing on our beach vacation so you know what that means… more adventures. Suzanne and I get up each morning and take an hour long walk on the beach traipsing over yesterday’s sandcastles. We spent the rest of yesterday morning in the pool and hot tub. This house is set up perfectly for us with the deck and patio facing the golf course and the pool is a great size for all 10 of us to play in at the same time. After lunch at the pool we jumped on our bikes and went over to Hilton Head … Read more…

Jellyfish, lightning strikes and angry dead birds

So the Farleys are on vacation….you know what that means – time for an adventure! We drove down to Hilton Head Island yesterday by way of South of the Border. As a child my friend Susan had a South of the Border bumper sticker on her car and I always thought of it as some magical place. As an adult I have passed South of the Border numerous times on drives down 95. The signs make us chuckle in North Carolina. I just asked everyone if they could remember any of the signs and Alex reported that one said they … Read more…

Writing and a little bit of preaching

Today I had an impromptu creative writing session for 9 neighborhood kids. I was energized before and after the class. I was really proud of some of the things the kids put together. I used some of my own lessons that I used two years ago when I taught creative writing at the Peter Paul Development Center in Richmond and I used some from the book Rip the Page. I want the kids to have fun with words and to just write. We always start out by writing for 5 minutes without a prompt and then we move into silly … Read more…

Sometimes

A little something from an overtired and over-entertained mama: Sometimes little boys are so thoughtful and serious about the silliest things. Like Ethan telling me he knows where jelly comes from. The center of a jellyfish of course. Sometimes people pretend to be something they aren’t because they think the people they are with like that type of person better. They should really just be themselves. Sometimes you can learn a lot from watching your kids play miniature golf. For instance, when Ethan is swinging no one should be near. And Eva can add her score in her head for … Read more…

Mashed Potatoes, Jo Malone and the Dead Man’s Float

I never really sit for very long. Well, long enough to write a blog post but sometimes I write them on my exercise bike or while I am standing in the kitchen. We had a fabulous busy few days with my cousin Shea and her family. My heart was heavy when they left. The last time I saw Shea she was blonde and I was a brunette and our dads were alive. Two years later, I am blonde and she is a brunette and our dads are not alive. I can’t tell you how much it helped me to talk … Read more…

Shed my skin

I decided to shed some of my well worn skin today. I decided to live a little outside of my comfy box. I decided to spice up a day that left me at home with the little guys while Justin and Alex jetted up to Boston for a Red Sox game. (THEY LOST!!!) I made Justin take the van to the airport instead of the Jeep. I was determined to drive the three little ones around in it today instead of the boring silver Odyssey. Sometimes it’s the little things in your day that make you feel a little bit … Read more…

My really wet happy place

The pool is my happy place. It might sound like an oxymoron or just plain moronic but with four kids the pool is the only place that I can truly relax. Yes, I said I can relax next to a big whole in the ground that is filled with water. I can leave all my daily chores and electronics behind and enjoy some active outdoor time with my family and I can usually sneak in some quiet Mommy time as well. The kids are on their own from the moment we walk in. They can sign us in, go to … Read more…
